Call for papers
Africa: Connections and Disruptions

The Call for papers is now open and closes at 11pm (CET) on 21st January.

ECAS 2019 invited panel proposals addressing the theme of Africa: Connections and Disruptions. 250 such panels have been selected representing all disciplines and methodological approaches of the social sciences and humanities.

Before you propose a paper or roundtable contribution, please read the theme of the congress, the information below, and then browse the list of panels.

The accepted panels of ECAS 2019 have been divided into thematic streams: Arts and Culture, Economy and Development, Environment and Geography , Health, History, Language and Literature, Law, Politics & International Relations, Religion, Social Anthropology, Sociology. When browsing through the list of panels, you can alternate between the All panels view that shows all the panels in one list, regardless of the stream and the All streams view that shows the list of streams.

CFP rules: only one paper/contribution per person!

Please note that an individual must not make more than one solo-authored paper proposal or roundtable contribution (although they may also convene one panel/roundtable; or be a discussant or chair in one panel).

All paper proposals must consist of:

  • a paper title
  • name/s and email address/es of author/s
  • a short abstract of fewer than 300 characters
  • a long abstract of fewer than 250 words

The main conference language being English, this information should be submitted in either English or French.

On submission of the proposal, the proposing author (but not the co-authors) will receive an automated email confirming receipt. If you do not receive this email, please first check the Login environment – Cocoa (see toolbar above right) to see if your proposal is there. If it is, it simply means your confirmation email got spammed/lost; if it is not, you will need to re-submit, as for some reason the process was not completed. Co-authors cannot be added/removed nor can papers be withdrawn by the proposers themselves – for that, please email admin(at)ecasconference.org .

Proposals will be marked as pending until the end of the Call for papers. Convenors will then be asked to make their decisions over the papers proposed to their panel with two weeks of the end of the CFP and to communicate those to the proposers, marking them up within the login environment (Cocoa).

All presenting authors (of accepted papers) will be expected to register online in advance of the event and pay a registration fee to attend.

Editing your paper

Authors can use the login link in the toolbar above to edit their proposals.

Formats

While the majority of accepted panels allow for the presentation of prepared papers, there are also a few roundtables (marked as [Roundtable]. You can only propose a contribution to a [Roundtable] if it is also marked [Open].

Timing of presentations

Panel sessions will last 90 minutes and include a maximum of 4 participants. So, no more than 3 papers with a discussant; or 4 papers with no discussant. It is important to allow time for discussion. Panels may run for a maximum of two sessions (i.e. a max of 8 papers). Roundtables may run for a maximum of one session. We will show the allocation of papers across the sessions within a panel in the printed programme (but not online), so delegates reading the conference book will be able to panel hop to attend specific papers.

Pre-circulation of papers

ECAS 2019 has no rule about this; however many convenors are keen to pre-circulate completed papers. To facilitate this and save on email traffic, if requested by convenors, authors can upload PDFs of their papers within the online system, which will then show as a downloadable file beneath their abstract on the public panel page on this site.

Communication between authors/convenors

Convenor/author email addresses are not shown on the panel pages for anti-spam reasons. However there is an in-built secure email messaging system. If you cannot work that, please email admin(at)ecasconference.org to obtain relevant email addresses.
